Türkiye has set an all-time monthly record for electricity generated from solar and wind. According to figures released by the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry on 6 October, solar generation in August reached 5.16 billion kilowatt-hours and wind generation 4.74 billion; together the two sources produced 9.9 billion kilowatt-hours, the highest monthly figure on record. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on social media that the country’s long-term investment in renewable infrastructure continues to be reflected in record generation figures.
Total electricity generation in August was 36.71 billion kilowatt-hours. Solar accounted for 14.1% and wind for 12.9%, so the two together supplied roughly 27% of the country’s power. Hydro remained the largest single source at 24.7%, with dams producing 9.08 billion kilowatt-hours. Renewable sources together generated 20.7 billion kilowatt-hours, a 56.4% share, and domestic sources 25.58 billion, a 69.7% share. August also saw the year’s highest daily output: on 13 August, generation reached 1,241,291 megawatt-hours.
The record is not confined to August. From 1 January to 31 August, hydro generation of 75.2 billion, wind of 30.4 billion and solar of 29.8 billion kilowatt-hours were the highest volumes and shares for that period since 2000. Renewables produced 149.8 billion kilowatt-hours over the eight months, a 60.3% share of total output, and domestic sources 181.8 billion, or 73.2%.
Installed capacity data show the investment behind the trend: by the end of August Türkiye’s total installed capacity had risen to 126,944 megawatts, with solar at 27,914 megawatts (22%), wind at 15,434 megawatts (12.2%) and hydro, the largest, at 32,331 megawatts. Solar and wind together reached 43,348 megawatts, 34.2% of total capacity. In 2025, the combined share of solar and wind in annual generation reached 22%, overtaking hydro for the first time. The figures show an energy-importing country increasing the weight of domestic generation at a time of rising diesel and natural gas prices.
Solar 5.16 and wind 4.74 billion kilowatt-hours, the 9.9 billion total and record, the 14.1% and 12.9% shares, the 36.71 billion total, hydro 9.08 billion and 24.7%, renewables 56.4% and domestic 69.7%, the 13 August daily record and the eight-month figures: Türkiye Gazetesi, Posta and İşçi Haber (ministry data), 6 October 2026. Minister Bayraktar's remarks: GENSED and Posta, 6 October 2026. The eight-month renewables 149.8 billion and 60.3%, domestic 181.8 billion and 73.2%: Onedio and Endeks24, 6 October 2026. The 27% share: Endeks24. The installed capacity figures (126,944, 27,914, 15,434, 32,331 and 43,348 megawatts, 34.2%) and the 2025 overtaking of hydro: Genç Gazete, 6 October 2026. Alomaliye, 6 October 2026.
The data rest on the ministry's statement; TEİAŞ's detailed tables were not separately examined. The 27% figure rounds the sum of 14.1% and 12.9%. The closing sentence on energy imports and prices is a general assessment.
The August shares of gas and coal generation, the effect on the imported fuel bill and September data are not covered here.
