New fighting has been reported in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, putting at risk the peace agreement signed in 2022. Tigrayan leaders told Reuters that a new war had begun, while a federal government official accused regional forces of launching an attack on Wednesday.
The accounts differ on how the clashes began. Reuters reported armed incidents in Tigray and neighbouring areas after months of rising tensions. The 2020–2022 war killed hundreds of thousands of people before the Pretoria agreement halted the fighting.
The developments come days after seven Ethiopian opposition groups, including the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, announced an alliance against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. Independent casualty and displacement figures for the new fighting were not available.
