Google’s Chromebook successor, the Googlebook, goes on sale in the US today: five premium Android-based laptops from $899, with Türkiye absent from the first wave

Googlebook laptops, announced in May as the successor to the Chromebook, go on sale in the US on 4 October and in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia on 5 October. ☀ The first wave has five models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo; the cheapest is the $899 Acer Googlebook 14, with the others between $1,199 and $1,299. ☀ Lenovo put its model on sale at $1,099.99 rather than the $1,299 Google had announced. ☀ The devices run the Android-based Googlebook OS, with Gemini AI and Android phone integration as the main pitch. Türkiye is not on the launch list.

Googlebook, the new laptop category Google positions as the successor to the Chromebook, went on sale in the United States on Sunday 4 October. Google announced the category on 12 May and opened pre-orders with a full launch on 21 September. Sales begin on 5 October in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia; Türkiye is not among the first-wave countries and no date has been announced for it.

Rather than building its own device, Google worked with five manufacturers. The first wave comprises the Acer Googlebook 14 ($899), the Dell XPS Googlebook ($1,199), the HP Googlebook 14 and ASUS Googlebook 14 ($1,299) and the Lenovo Googlebook 15. The $1,299 price Google gave for the Lenovo model at launch contradicted the company’s own announcement: Lenovo said its model, with a 15.3-inch 120Hz OLED display, would go on sale at $1,099.99. The devices use Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite or Intel Core Ultra processors, 16 to 32 GB of memory, 2.5K or 2.8K OLED touchscreens and aluminium chassis; Google claims up to 14 hours of video playback and 16 hours of web browsing. Twelve months of Google AI Pro is included.

Googlebook OS is an Android-based system built on desktop foundations inherited from ChromeOS; as 9to5Google put it, it’s Android, stupid. The platform’s main draw is integration with Android phones: users can reach phone apps and files from the laptop, which Digital Trends describes as the cohesion Windows has attempted in pieces but never matched to what Apple offers between iPhone and Mac. Gemini AI is built in; Lenovo even made a platform-specific AI Mouse with Gemini access.

Google insists Googlebook is a premium laptop category rather than a Chromebook with a new badge; ChromeOS will continue in education and managed fleets. Early coverage is split between acknowledging the ambition of the AI-first pitch and questioning whether it justifies a price that pushes Googlebook out of budget-Chromebook territory. Samsung’s absence from the launch manufacturers is a notable gap.
